Case study

E-Cargo delivery

Hubbub / FoodConnect E-Cargo bike delivery

The Problem

Time was a major constraint for FoodConnect as food needed to be
delivered while it was still fresh, and large retailers demanded
accurate pickup information and wanted to stick to strict timescales.

As collection and delivery addresses changed daily, it was time
consuming for coordinators to organise routes and difficult to give
them to riders/drivers in a clear, systemised manner.

“Collection times and the volume of food can be a real challenge.” – Helen Innes, Project Coordinator

The Implementation

Coordinators, riders and drivers all trained on how to use the DriverNet system.

-Coordinators update route daily by inputting addresses into the management system.

Riders and drivers load optimised routes on their mobile phone app.

The Result

The DriverNet app helped to simplify the donation experience, improve efficiency and move food more quickly between businesses and community groups, thus resulting in fresher food reaching the consumer. Admin time was reduced, allowing volunteers and staff to focus on their community, which was especially important as they supported shielding households during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Using the DriverNet app to coordinate deliveries not only reduced the Covid-19 risk, but also further reduced unneccessary journeys, and therefore reduced carbon emissions. Live tracking and issue reporting enhanced communications and allowed consistent up-to-date information to be passed onto large retailers

“Fewer volunteers are required to pick up food from supermarkets now the van or bikes do it, so it’s reducing the COVID risk.” – Maggie, CFN Coordinator
